Monsieur Lazhar

This film was beautiful!

Due to the trailer, I expected this film to be a heart-warming film about a substitute teacher who is awesome. Well… the substitute - Monsieur Lazhar - was pretty awesome, bu this film was heart-breaking if anything of the sort. It was funny and sad and tragic and loving and wonderful! The film is in Canadien French and tells the story of how a class of 10-year-old children cope with the suicide of their teacher.

I was crying… of course. Ce n’était pas du ma faute!!!!

“Fantastic…. 10/10”

I would love everybody to see this film, any age (probably 12 upward) and either gender… my brother loved it!

Only You (1994)

Only You is a 1994 love story which is the most predictable thing i have ever watched! And I’ve seen a vast amount of predictable films… Okay… I did only start to watch it with my Brother and Father because Robert Downy Jr was in it, and we all know he’s great! He was pretty good in it. You know, I don’t think he ages. At all…

Anyway, the film follows a woman - Faith - who is ……. blah blah blah. Just don’t bother. It was pretty bad. Plus it was set in the 1990s, the years fashion forgot.

I don’t recommend this film, unless you want to sit at home, alone, smothered in blankets, eating a large tub of ice cream, and surrounded by your numerous cats.

Everything sounds better when Ed Westwick reads it. I listened to it and thought, “Wow, this has improved this letter like 1000%.”

Mozart’s Sister (2010)

This film obviously is based on the life of Mozart’s sister - Maria Anna (Nannerl) Mozart. She herself was a musical genius also, but got overshadowed by her younger brother. She was a very skilled on the violin and harpsichord, but was told that she was no longer allowed to play the violin because women weren’t able enough. Nannerl also wanted to compose as she heard music, her own notes. Of course, she was not allowed to do this either, and came to dress as a boy to be able to perform her pieces and hear them played. Love stings and fate turns her away from composition, and she dedicates her life to the success of her brother, and the wishes of her father.

I wanted to cry when she burned her music. She had composed a fantastic violin sonata, and such, but she burns it.

The film was far too long. There were many occasions when I wanted to check the time, or felt that the film was just about to finish, but it didn’t. It kept going and showing us clips from the many coach trips she took.

The film was very well done, with a cast and crew basically made up of the whole Feret family. The costumes were gorgeous, and of course, the music was sublime!

I wouldn’t be able to recommend this film to anyone I know, but I’m sure that there is a specific audience dying to see this film. I was the youngest person there, and apart from a couple in their 20s, everyone else in the audience was either 50 or above.

Titanic - Imax 3D

I have to admit, this is the first time I have ever seen Titanic, and I saw it is Imax 3D… one of the best cinema experiences ever!

I loved it, if you can love a film so tragic. I enjoyed the banter between Rose and Jack, and I loved the feeling of their love that seemed indestructible, and I hated her fiancé, and loathed her mother somewhat. It was tragically beautiful, and I think that’s what I loved about it. It brought me to tears, and I felt freezing while they were in the water. It wasn’t when you realise that jack was dead that brought me to tears, it was when Rose got the whistle. She promised to make the most of her life, and she forced herself through the water to be saved, to fight for the both of them.

What I hate, though, is that it is a true story being told by someone who was there - Rose. This heartbreaking adventure was real.

I cannot believe I haven’t watched it before, but I want everyone to see it. No matter when, where or how, just watch this beautiful film.

Sense and Sensibility

I have recently finished reading the fabulous book by Jane Auston, and took fancy in viewing the animated picture.

I must admit that I was rather disappointed in it. It was rather too ruff around the edges for my liking, I felt is could have had a smoother flow to it, and kept more to the plot. There were complete characters missing - Lady Middleton and such - and there was too much of Margret; every time she came on screen i found myself shouting “Go away” or “Shut up” to her, for in the book, she is hardly in it, and I quite frequently forgot that there were three sisters instead of two.

The casting was fantastic, though; exactly what I thought all the characters looked like - except Miss Lucy Steele, I saw her blonde - especially Mr Edward Ferrars - Hugh Grant; he was perfect for the part.

I suggest reading the book to all women, for it is a classic that must be attempted to be enjoyed. I shall next tackle Emma and Wuthering Heights, as I have not yet read either. (I have read Withering Tights, though)

Thor

Watched this with my brother today…

It wasn’t as good as I thought it to be. Don’t get me wrong, it was so completely and perfectly cast… I mean… Chris Hemsworth is the person so perfect for this role, with the best voice and being completely stunning anyway. But… I just don’t think the plot was thick enough. The character of Thor actually saved it slightly from being… quite dull… maybe it’s a bit harsh, but… the film didn’t have much to grasp.

I didn’t really understand what Loki was trying to do. Was he trying to get the throne? or Was he trying to destroy Thor? or Protect his father? or what? I didn’t get it.

The film had it’s funny moments, which were actually pretty well done. The set/landscape was well designed and sought out. The costumes, despite being ridiculous, were pretty cool.

But i can’t help being a little let down by it. I know that Thor is making an appearance  in the new Avengers film, which i am going to have to go and see. Maybe there will be some answers lying in there about Loki and such.

Delicacy

French film starring Francois Damiens and Audrey Tautou. Based on a book.

Fantastically charming and lovable. It was perfectly cast and very well done. It was funny as well… I found myself laughing a lot of the time, especially the awkwardness of the characters being together. There were sections of monologue, where we were let into what the characters were thinking, and it was very enjoyable and well done.

I recommend this film to everyone from the age of 14+ It is a rom com that everyone could enjoy. I was surprised, however, to find a lot of unaccompanied males in the cinema, who seemed to be enjoying themselves quite a bit. And, of course, the men who will dragged along by their wife or girlfriend would certainly enjoy this splendid film.

The Stranger

Film night!

My father bought some DVDs this afternoon, and we decided that tonight we should watch the 1946 film ‘The Stranger’, starring Orson Welles, Edward G Robinson and Loretta Young.

The film follows the story of a hiding Nazi, just after the second world war. He hides in the town of Harper - a small town, quiet, where everyone knows each other. But do they really know him? Then of course, danger and a Nazi Hunter comes to find him, and all goes awry.

I found this film slightly dull for the most part, but the ending scenes were quite exciting. It was predictable, but then… shocking. It saved the best bits to surprise. Overall, it wasn’t too bad and grows on you. The actual cinematics of the film were amazingly well done. There were brilliant camera angles used, and great effects with shadows. It was incredibly well filmed. This film was also splendidly cast.

I would recommend this film to a slightly older audience than myself, but seeming as I’m only 14, it isn’t difficult. I think that everyone should watch it just to see the fantastic way it’s filmed!

Un vie de chat / A Cat in Paris

A while back, during the French Film Festival in Edinburgh, I went to see ‘Un vie de chat’. It was charming and in that french style we all know and love. The animation was spectacular and beautiful! The plot… well… it is a childs film, but it is lovely and simple. Obviously, it was in french and subtitled, but I don’t mind that, in fact I rather like it!

This film came out again to the Filmhouse recently, and I went to see it again. As soon as the music came on, I was loving it. The first scene, they spoke. I turned to my mother (who had come with me and my father) and we wore the same horrified and upset expression… They’ve dubbed the film! I don’t think I would have minded that except they had done it so badly. It completely ruined the charm and the experience! They have ruined a great film.

Anyway… The film follows a cat around the city. It turns out that this cat is literally a cat burglar as he assists a thief! The cats owner is a police women, in search for the man who killed her husband. The story shows how the daughter gets caught up in the affairs of both the thief and the polices business. It is a very simple story, but well told.

I highly recommend this film for children, as long as it is the French version. Otherwise, don’t bother!

Also, for everyone… there were a lot of unaccompanied adults at the cinema who enjoyed it!
